The University held a Risk Management Workshop at the Central Catering Unit (CCU) on July 31, 2026. The workshop brought together the University's leadership and key administrators to strengthen institutional resilience through proactive risk management.
The workshop was organised by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Finance, Planning and Development), Prof Josiah Aduda, and was officiated by the Vice-Chancellor, Eng. Prof Ayub Gitau. The event was attended by Faculty Deans, Registrars and members of the Internal Audit Department.
Speaking during the opening session, Prof. Aduda emphasised that effective risk management is a shared responsibility that requires a common approach, collective understanding, and a proactive culture across all departments.
"Risk management is not a bureaucratic burden or a checklist to be filed away, but a strategic tool for protecting our students, staff, reputation and future. It is essential to sustaining our budget and operations," he said.
Prof. Aduda noted that the University is operating in an increasingly dynamic environment marked by financial constraints, regulatory changes, technological advancements and heightened global competition in higher education. He highlighted key challenges facing the institution, including reduced Government capitation, unpredictable revenue streams, declining student enrolment, underperforming income-generating units, and shrinking external funding.
He further observed that rising operational costs, including personnel expenses, utilities, facility maintenance and technology licensing, continue to place significant pressure on the University's resources. He cautioned that unmanaged operational failures or unforeseen emergencies could have serious financial implications, making proactive risk management an institutional priority.
Calling on participants to adopt a forward-looking approach, Prof. Aduda urged University leaders to anticipate and mitigate risks before they escalate into major challenges. "All of us manage risk every day. Whether you oversee departmental budgets, protect research data and grants, maintain campus safety, or develop new academic programmes, you play a vital role in safeguarding our University," he said.
He encouraged participants to recognise that every decision has financial implications and to embrace proactive financial and operational planning as a means of enhancing institutional sustainability.
The workshop provided participants with practical knowledge and tools for identifying potential risks, assessing their likely impact, and developing cost-effective mitigation strategies that support the University's core academic mission. Participants were encouraged to critically evaluate risks within their respective departments and implement measures that will strengthen the University's operational effectiveness and resilience.
In his closing remarks, Prof. Aduda called upon participants to use the insights gained during the workshop to identify practical and efficient solutions that will secure the University's future and foster a safer, stronger, and more resilient institution.
The workshop underscores the University's commitment to embedding a culture of risk awareness, accountability, and sound governance as it continues to navigate a rapidly evolving higher education landscape.
