The University of Nairobi hosted a high-level delegation of Heads of Internal Audit from various Nigerian universities on July 23, 2025. This marked a significant step in fostering inter-university collaboration in governance, accountability and institutional development.

Representing the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Margaret Hutchinson, at the engagement was the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Ag) for Finance, Planning and Development, Prof. Jackson Maalu, who formally welcomed the delegation. He emphasized the importance of regional and continental cooperation in strengthening university systems and sharing best practices, particularly in the areas of internal audit, risk management, and data governance.

The guests were received by the University of Nairobi’s Director of Internal Audit, Mr. Kenneth Gitau, who coordinated the technical presentations and interactive sessions. The visit featured detailed briefings on the structure and operations of the University’s Internal Audit Department, the comprehensive audit process per the laws of Kenya and the institution’s data protection framework in compliance with Kenya’s Data Protection Act.

In his remarks, Mr. Gitau noted the importance of the engagement. This engagement offers an invaluable opportunity for peer learning and professional benchmarking. As universities, we share many challenges and aspirations. Collaborating on internal audit practices helps us build more resilient and transparent institutions,” he said.

The Nigerian delegation expressed their appreciation for the warm reception and the depth of insights shared. The visit concluded with a tour of select administrative departments that interface closely with internal audit functions, further highlighting the University of Nairobi’s integrated approach to institutional oversight and accountability.

The exchange underscored the University’s continued role as a regional leader in university management systems and its commitment to contributing to continental capacity building across African higher education institutions.
