Each college has a committee that oversees asset disposal at the University of Nairobi. Each item has a certain procedure to be followed before it is fully disposed.
The training for the disposal committees brought to light the guidelines and regulations from different government agencies like NEMA.
The Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor, Finance Planning and Development, Prof. Kiama noted that those that have travelled to different countries have seen how disposal is done, he cited an example of a country that has a day in the year that everyone disposes off everything. They remove it from their houses and offices and out them out in the street. Some trucks pass by picking the disposal. After that, until the following year, there’s no disposing off unless one is ready to pay for it.
Prof. Kiama urged the committees to meet as often as they can, because if they don’t meet the accounting officer is the one who takes the responsibility. He said waste takes up space, and that space has a cost implication. He said that each item that is generated through the University’s business has a guideline on how it should be disposed and after how long. He urged the committees to meet and not to let their colleagues and the whole institution down.
The Procurement Manager, Ms Mary Kimani and Deputy Procurement Manager, Mr. Silas Katam, took the members through a training session on the do’s and don’ts and later on answered the questions raised by members.
Planning Registrar, Mr. Bernard Njuguna moderated the session that was held at the Central Catering Unit on Wednesday December 11, 2019
