The University of Nairobi, on January 21, 2026, received a KES 2 million donation from the Chinese Property Developer Association (Kenya) during a cheque handover ceremony held at the University.
The cheques were presented by Ms Wen Hui on behalf of the Association’s Chairman, Mr Zhang Jiaping, and formally received for the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson, by the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance, Planning and Development, Prof. Jackson Maalu.
The event was also attended by the Dean of Students, Mr Johnson Kinyua, and the Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi, Prof. Wang Shangxue, highlighting the strengthening partnership between the University and its Chinese collaborators.
The donation will benefit 40 needy students, alleviating their financial challenges and enabling them to focus on their studies and personal growth. This support reinforces the University’s dedication to inclusive education and student welfare by ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder academic excellence.
In his remarks, Prof. Maalu thanked the Chinese Property Developer Association (Kenya) for the timely contribution, noting that it demonstrates a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility and youth empowerment through education. He emphasised the importance of such partnerships in enhancing the University’s ability to develop future leaders and skilled professionals.
Prof. Maalu further expressed optimism that ongoing collaboration between the University of Nairobi and the Association would yield sustainable and mutually beneficial results. He reaffirmed the University’s appreciation of the partnership and its commitment to expanding cooperation in support of education, innovation, and social development.
Ms Wen Hui, in her address, underscored the Association’s belief in education as a key driver of social and economic progress. She noted that the donation reflects the Association’s commitment to empowering young people and investing in the future of society, while also expressing interest in strengthening long-term collaboration with the University of Nairobi.
